Domestic violence knows no borders, but neither do your rights
With the aim of protecting Brazilian women living in the United States who face situations of abuse, the Immigration Foundation has launched a free booklet about VAWA (Violence Against Women Act).
The booklet was written in clear, accessible, and sensitive language, and presents practical information about the legal rights of immigrant victims of violence, regardless of their immigration status.
What is VAWA?
VAWA is a United States law created in 1994 that offers legal protection and support to victims of domestic violence, including immigrants. The legislation allows people abused by spouses, ex-spouses, intimate partners, or children who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents to apply for immigration benefits without depending on the abuser.
If you or someone you know is experiencing physical, psychological, financial, immigration, or sexual abuse, this guide can be a tool for empowerment, protection, and a fresh start.
What you’ll find in the primer
- How to know if you are in a situation of domestic violence.
- Who can benefit from VAWA?
- What are the rights of victims in the US?
- How to protect your children
- Step-by-step guide to seeking help safely.
- How can the Imigra Foundation help?
- Support from the Brazilian Consulate and other trusted organizations.
Even if you don’t have legal status, you have rights and can ask for help.
