What Is an NTA?
A Notice to Appear (NTA) is an official document issued by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). It is used to formally begin a deportation (removal) process against a person.
The NTA informs you that the government believes you are not eligible to remain in the United States, and that you must appear before an Immigration Court judge for a hearing.
What Does the NTA Include?
This document generally contains:
- Your personal information (name, country of origin, address)
- The immigration laws the government claims you violated
- The date, time, and location of your hearing (in some cases, this may be provided later)
- The instruction to appear before an Immigration Judge
What Happens After Receiving an NTA?
Many people don’t realize that receiving an NTA does not mean that the deportation process has already started. For the process to officially begin, the government must file (or “docket”) your NTA with the Immigration Court.
Only after this filing is completed does your case get assigned to a judge, officially placing you in removal proceedings.
In recent months, this filing has been happening very quickly — so it’s essential to seek legal guidance immediately after receiving your NTA.
How to Check If Your Case Has Been Filed in Court
You can verify if your NTA has been officially docketed:
- By calling the immigration automated system: 1-800-898-7180
- Or by visiting: https://acis.eoir.justice.gov
For both, you’ll need your Alien Registration Number (A-Number).
What to Do If You Receive an NTA
Do not ignore the document. Even if no hearing date has been set yet, your name is already on immigration records.
Seek legal help immediately.
In some cases, it may be possible to present a defense or even request case dismissal before it moves forward.
Gather your documents.
Organize your records, identification, and anything that may support your case.
